I basically tried to "immerse" myself articially in the language: i read some grammar books and did some exercises, tried to read kid's stories and easy wikipedia pages, played computer games in german, listened to songs in german, used facebook and reddit and everything else in german, etc.. Immersion works because the best way to learn german is to hear it and practice speaking it every day in the context of your normal life. when people talk about immersion, what they really mean is learning by doing – to get away from an academic approach and live the language.. The best way i have found so far for me are: assimil, memrise, and smartergerman's video course a1-b1 (the songs for memorizing prepositions is the best!!). i also listen to a few go-to podcasts, slowgerman and gruese aus deutschland..
